　　生活在紐約的米蘭達和她最好的朋友沙爾有一套安全生活準則，比方說安全的雜貨店可以去，轉角的瘋子應該要避開……但從沙爾在街上莫名其妙遭人痛扁那天，一切開始分裂崩解！沙爾不再跟她說話、媽媽藏起來的緊急備用鑰匙被偷走了、米蘭達在家裡發現一張神祕的字條，上面歪七扭八的字寫著：

　　字條一張接著一張，米蘭達漸漸明白，留字條的人似乎知道些什麼。每個訊息都使她更加相信，唯有她能夠預防某個她愛的人悲慘地死去，但她該怎麼開始寫這封信呢？
 
人物介紹
 
米蘭達
　　一個就讀六年級的平凡紐約女生，平時會幫忙媽媽練習參加電視節目的競賽「獎金兩萬金字塔」。最喜歡的書是麥德琳．蘭歌寫的《時間的皺紋》。
 
米蘭達的媽媽
　　單親媽媽，法學院來不及畢業就因懷了米蘭達而被迫放棄。在米蘭達出生後任職於一間小間的律師事務所，擔任律師助手。
 
李察
　　米蘭達媽媽的男朋友，是位律師。右腿比左腿短兩吋，每當米蘭達的媽媽戲稱他為「完美先生」時，他就會敲敲他的右膝蓋。
 
沙爾
　　和米蘭達是青梅竹馬的好友，同樣出身單親家庭。自從某天被一個路邊的男生莫名其妙痛揍之後，就和米蘭達形同陌路。
 
馬可斯
　　痛揍沙爾的人，住在米蘭達家附近，和米蘭達就讀同一間學校、同一個年級。是個會用太陽所在位置判斷時間的聰明男生。
 
安瑪麗
　　米蘭達的同學，跟另一個同學茱莉亞是一起長大的好友，但有一天她不知何故不再和安瑪麗說話，安瑪麗便和米蘭達變得越來越好。
 
柯林
　　米蘭達的同學，一個矮矮小小的男生。常常會說些希奇古怪的話，讓人一方面覺得認識他挺驕傲的，另一方面又好希望自己沒站在他身邊。
 
茱莉亞
　　安瑪麗的好友，也是米蘭達的同學。家境富裕的黑人女生，會隨父母旅遊世界各地，形容自己眼睛的顏色是「百分之六十可可」色。
 
笑笑男
　　去年秋天出現在米蘭達家轉角的流浪漢，每天都睡在郵筒下面，常常對著天空揮拳，或橫躺對著街上亂踢，口中嘀咕著：「書包、口袋鞋、書包、口袋鞋。」
